In July, Kamala Harris was expecting to play a supporting role in the attempt to return an ageing President Biden to the White House.
His decision to quit the race propelled her to the Democratic Party’s nomination and required her to build up a campaign and a staff, relying on many of Biden’s existing policies and officials.
Until seven years ago her political career had been confined to California, but should she win the US presidential election in just a few days’ time, Harris will have to construct an administration and at the same time balance the competing wings of her party.
