Topgolf-like driving range among major projects approved by Peoria Park District

PEORIA (25News Now) – Golf, the Peoria Zoo and social service programs are among some major projects winning approval from the Peoria Park District board.

The board on Wednesday night accepted a bid by Peoria Metro Construction to add an electronic driving range to the Golf Learning Center on the city’s north end, similar to Topgolf.

The sports entertainment complex will be two stories tall with 21 bays. A full-service restaurant, bar and golf simulator room will be included.

The renovations are funded by a $4.46 million state grant. The park district’s executive director Emily Cahill said they’ll break ground next month with an expected completion by spring 2025.

“You’re going to get good food, good drink and a good experience,“ Cahill said. “As we see the community continue to diversify, we see new people coming in every day. We want to be able to meet their expectations.”

Golfer Chuck Hubert said it’s another family-friendly activity that he’s excited to try.

“I think it’s great. I’ve been to Topgolf with my family in St. Louis and Colorado. It’s reasonable and great fun,” Hubert said.

The board also approved a contract to improve parts of the Peoria Zoo. Cahill said $2 million will go to the zoo’s Tropics building and tiger exhibit enclosure.

The Detweiller Riverside Clubhouse, formerly the Detweiller Golf Course, will be leased to 22VA. It’s a nonprofit organization that will use the space for art and social events for veterans.

In a new partnership with East Bluff Community Center, the district will provide diverse programming and activities focused on recreation, wellness, education, community and workforce development programs.

“People who live here, work here, play here are all going to benefit from at least one of those things on that menu if not more than one of those things,” Cahill said. “It’s really going to be an exciting end of summer and early fall as we start to see these things taking root.”
