FLORIDA TODAY’s Rob Landers brings you some of today’s top local stories on the News in 90 Seconds.
Topgolf‘s plans to build a $28 million golf and entertainment center in Viera that will employ about 200 people moved forward Thursday evening after the Brevard County Commission approved key changes necessary for the project to get underway. Topgolf’s facilities will include include a two-story golf venue with 64 hitting bays, outdoor patio areas; restaurant and bar facilities; and spaces for parties and other events at the complex.
Plans from Topgolf show that patrons will use north-facing hitting bays to drive golf balls into the range, which includes targets at intervals up to 215 yards away. Lighting at the facility will be designed not to interfere with traffic on nearby Interstate 95.
Jose Pazmino, a representative for Topgolf told commissioners the “unique shape of the building” made it necessary to request exceptions to the county’s rules on fence height, lighting and wall signage in order to move forward.
The board unanimously voted to approve the variances, with District 4’s Rob Feltner expressing support for the nearly 12-acre entertainment facility coming to his district in Viera.
“We’re all looking forward to coming out there,” Feltner told Topgolf’s team at Thursday’s meeting.
The project would be built on an undeveloped site owned by The Viera Co. located east of The Avenue Viera’s 16-screen AMC movie theater and west of Interstate 95. The facility will be situated near the north end of Bromley Drive, east of Lake Andrew Drive.
Viera’s Topgolf will be the first entertainment complex of its kind in the county, open from 9 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and drawing approximately 200,000 visitors a year. Officials could not give an exact timeline on when construction would begin or be completed.
