UCFB’s very own Simon Fitzjohn has offered his top three tips for gaining a successful career within the sports industry.
Simon, UCFB’s employability and career planning manager, has said what he believes to be crucial for working in sport.
You have to be able to demonstrate to a potential employer that not only this is something you want to do, but that you can do it.
The way you do that is by getting experience on your CV. A morning somewhere, a day somewhere, a week, a month, a season. It doesn’t matter what it is; You have to get that experience.
Say yes to everything. That is the quickest way of getting yourself known. Once you get known, the job offers come along.
LinkedIn is absolutely critical in terms of positioning yourself as a wannabe sports professional.
Make your profile look professional, get all the relevant skills and experience onto your profile, make sure you’ve got a good photograph.
Use it to connect everybody in the field you would like to go into in the sports industry.
Your CV is your calling card, your business card. It has to jump off a desk.
You must tailor your CV and cover letter to whichever role you are applying for. Do not lazily put one CV together and send that everywhere.
You may have the best interview skills in the world. But if your CV can’t get you invited to an interview, then all those skills, all that confidence, all that wealth of knowledge and passion counts for nothing.
