Recently, former NBA All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas joined the Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz. Thomas is aiming for a comeback to the league and his journey starts in the G League.
Thomas has made a few comeback attempts and even played in the league last season with the Phoenix Suns for a few games. The former star believes he can perform at a high level and is determined to see his dream of staying in the NBA stay on course.
If Thomas can put together a strong stint in the G League, he could easily get picked up by a team that could use a guard. While most teams will wait to see how things shake out following the trade deadline, we could see Thomas joining a squad shortly after.
But which teams may be interested in adding Thomas to their roster? Here are the top three teams who could use a player like Thomas for the stretch run of the year.
Thomas has had a few stints with the Lakers but Los Angeles does need help at the guard position. The veteran also has plenty of experience playing with LeBron James as he has done it with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Lakers.
Thomas could provide some extra depth for the Lakers in the backcourt, especially after they traded away D’Angelo Russell. While he wouldn’t have a massive role in all likelihood, being on a contending team could be great for Thomas.
Orlando has been one of the better defensive teams this season but they have struggled on the offensive end of the floor. Thomas could likely help that while giving this team another veteran for their playoff push.
Thomas is a career 17.5 points per game scorer and while he may not have that type of performance left in him, his presence could help. Orlando could also use another guard to help run the show offensively.
The Spurs have Chris Paul and Stephon Castle running the show but Thomas could serve the bench well. This team could have an entertaining lineup with the 5-foot-9 Tjomas playing alongside 7-foot-3 Victor Wembanyama.
Thomas could provide a nice spark off the bench, giving Paul some rest down the stretch of the season. San Antonio has a good culture in place and it could help Thomas in his comeback attempt.
