Sticking to a fitness routine is notoriously hard to do.
Well-intentioned resolutions often fade away within weeks, motivation ebbs and flows and countless gym memberships often remain unused.
Trainer Tiffiny Hall has been working in the space for years and acknowledges keeping up with fitness goals is undoubtedly difficult.
“It’s so hard, I think adherence is the hardest part,” she tells 9honey.

We all know moving our bodies is so important for our overall health and wellbeing, but often the thought of trudging through a 5k run or slogging it out in the weights section of the gym is enough to make us put exercise in the too-hard basket.
Hall says this is usually because we’re trying to do exercise that simply doesn’t work for us and has one piece of advice for people who struggle to stay consistent.
“You’ve got to find the right fit for you,” Hall explains, “and that is about finding something that suits you the most.”

Growing up Hall was exposed to many different types of sport and exercise from ballet to diving and athletics. But there was one sport in particular that clicked for her.
“Martial arts resonated with me [the most] and I stuck with that and it was the right fitness for me,” Hall explains.
But that’s not to say one particular sport will work for everyone. While Martial Arts is the sport for Hall, her son has leaned towards another sport entirely.
“My son is really taking off with basketball, and that makes him really happy,” she says.
Meanwhile, other women in Hall’s life have found themselves leaning towards dance classes, barre classes or Pilates as their preferred form of exercise.

Hall says all exercise is beneficial, and whether it’s running marathons or doing Pilates, any exercise that brings you joy is the best one for you. And once you find what that sport is, the next step is to find support to stick with it, she says.
“You’ve got to find what resonates with you and once you find that then you’ve got to get support,” Hall says.
“These days, online communities are fantastic for whatever you’re into. If you’re into running [for example] then you can get a great run club happening and there are online communities that will support you with that.”

Hall says getting support from those around you is key to sticking to the exercise that you choose, but how do we go about knowing how much or how often to do it?
Well, Hall says, that’s where a bit of strategy comes in.
“You’ve got to have a plan … whether that’s joining up with an online coach that you trust or getting a personal trainer and splitting it with a mate so it’s not so expensive,” she says.
“You can’t just walk into a gym and go, ‘OK, I’m gonna exercise’. What exercises are you doing? What reps? What sets? What weights? What intensity? You really do need a plan.”
Hall says following these three steps will help get you on the right path to sticking with exercise.
“If you can find the right fit for you, find some support that makes you accountable and then get a plan together, then you will be consistent,” she says.
