There have been many great tennis players who have never won a Grand Slam title, and there are also a number of leading stars who have not competed in a major final.
Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Jack Draper are four excellent active players who have a chance to reach their first major final at the 2024 US Open.
Here, we look at the five best current ATP players who have not played in a Grand Slam final.
Grigor Dimitrov remains one of the best players in the history of men’s tennis not to play in a Grand Slam final after his exit at the 2024 US Open. He was forced to retire in his quarter-final match against Frances Tiafoe due to an injury.
The Bulgarian has reached the semi-finals at three different Slams (Wimbledon in 2014, the 2017 Australian Open, and the 2019 US Open), while he has made major quarter-finals on five other occasions.
Dimitrov, 33, climbed to a career-high ranking of world No 3 at the end of a terrific 2017 season in which he won the Cincinnati Masters and the ATP Finals.
The current world No 9 has secured nine ATP titles overall from his 20 finals and has featured in three Masters 1000 championship matches.
He has earned 43 wins against players ranked in the top 10, including victories over Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Carlos Alcaraz.

Since breaking into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in October 2020, Rublev has remained there for all but two weeks and has reached a career-high of world No 5. He qualified for the ATP Finals four straight times between 2020 and 2023.

Gael Monfils achieved his best Grand Slam results at the French Open and the US Open, where he made the semi-finals in 2008 and 2016 respectively.
The Frenchman has reached the last eight a further three times at both Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows, while he is also a two-time Australian Open quarter-finalist.
Monfils reached a career-high ranking of world No 6 in 2016 and qualified for the ATP Finals for the only time in his career that year.
The 37-year-old has collected 12 ATP titles (including three ATP 500s) and is also a 22-time runner up on the tour, with three of his finals coming at Masters 1000 level. He reached finals in 19 consecutive seasons between 2005 and 2023.
Monfils has beaten 37 opponents who were ranked in the top 10 at the time, including Federer, Nadal, Murray and Alcaraz.
Richard Gasquet was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon in 2007 and 2015, while he also reached the last four at the US Open in 2013. He reached two other major quarter-finals.
The 38-year-old has secured 16 ATP singles titles (all at ATP 250 level) and has won three or more events on each of hard courts, clay and grass.
Gasquet is a 17-time beaten finalist on the tour, with three of his runner-up results coming at Masters 1000 tournaments, while he is a two-time ATP Finals qualifier.
The Frenchman has earned 36 wins over top 10-ranked opponents, a tally that features victories over Federer, Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka. He reached a career-best ranking of world No 7.
Hubert Hurkacz’s best result at a major tournament was his run to the 2021 Wimbledon semi-finals, while he also made the last eight at the 2024 Australian Open.
The Pole has won eight titles from the 11 finals he has contested, including two Masters 1000 crowns from three championship matches.
The 27-year-old has achieved a career-high ranking of world No 6 and qualified for the ATP Finals in 2021 (he also featured at the event as an alternate in 2023).
