There hasn’t been a position in ESPN’s annual rankings where the San Francisco 49ers weren’t represented. We’ve gone through running backs, defensive tackles, and edge rushers. Today, it’s the safeties turn.
The Niners have an All-Pro in Talanoa Hufanga. But Hufanga’s injury history reared its ugly head last year in the middle of the season. Talanoa suffered a non-contact injury and would miss the second half of the season due to a torn ACL.
That opened the door for rookie Ji’Ayir Brown to get some much-needed playing time under his belt. Brown’s promising performance in his first game hinted at his potential to be a season-long starter. Despite some inconsistencies in his tackling and play, and an injury, Brown’s future looks bright.
The future position for the 49ers is Brown and Hufanga if they stay healthy. The two can complement each other perfectly with their high football IQs and reliance on film study. The defense unquestionably missed Hufanga’s instincts in the playoffs, but with Brown by his side, the future looks promising.
Despite not playing after Week 10, Hufanga still came in at No. 9 on ESPN’s top safety list:
9. Talanoa Hufanga, San Francisco 49ers
Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest ranking: Unranked
Age: 24 | Last year’s ranking: 9
A torn ACL in late November stunted his momentum, but Hufanga has put together two quality seasons and easily made the cut for the top 10.
Hufanga, the latest star on San Francisco’s impressive defense, finished the year with 51 tackles and three interceptions despite missing the last six weeks of the season.
“Hufanga is a playmaker,” an NFL personnel evaluator said. “But I don’t love him in coverage. Has to be playing top down on the ball. But he’s incredibly instinctual and physical in that role.”
Added an NFC scout: “He plays with a great edge about him, has a nice football spirit about him.”
The loss of Tashaun Gipson could lead to more cornerbacks playing or Hufanga playing more of a quasi-linebacker if his coverage skills aren’t up to par post-ACL injury. Gipson could walk down in the slot and play man-to-man against a receiver or tight end. That was not a strength of Gipson or Brown, so Nick Sorensen will have to get creative or bank on Brown improving in coverage.
Hufanga still making the ranking speaks to his abilities and importance to the 49ers defense.
