MANITOWOC – Plenty of positive, exciting business news occurred in Manitowoc County in August.
Here’s a look at the top Streetwise stories you might have missed.
As the car ferry’s season sails to its Oct. 6 close, Streetwise took a look at the summer it has had.
The Badger returned to night and two-hour shoreline cruises.
And it faced just one mechanical glitch this year, staying docked for a day in Ludington, Michigan, while the ship’s engineers and electricians made repairs caused by an electrical issue aboard the ship.
Prices for riding the Badger go down in fall. Roundtrip tickets for adults drop from $161 in summer to $140 in fall. A one-way adult ticket goes from $88 to $77. The Badger also has a promotional offer to travel round-trip without a vehicle, returning within 48 hours, and pay $106 per adult and $60 per child ages 5-15.

Brooke Nebel opened her own small bakery, Brooke’s Bread and Baked Goods, in early June.
She sells a variety of flavored breads, sandwich bread, muffins and scones.
She said she’s always loved to bake and has fond memories in the kitchen with her mom.
She’s grown from selling a few loaves to friends and family to a steady stream of 20 or so weekly customers.
And her business is growing — Streetwise received a number of calls after the story ran from customers interested in buying from Brooke.

Readers tuned into my story about Fork & Dagger’s visit from America’s Best Restaurants, a national media and marketing company that focuses on bringing attention to local, independently owned restaurants through its ABR Roadshow.
The show highlights popular dishes, along with an extensive on-camera interview with owners Nate and Dee Dee Paulish about the restaurant’s special place in the community.
The episode is scheduled to air later this year on social media channels.
As the population ages, so does the need for medical services. ClearSky Health broke ground in August on a new 36-bed medical rehabilitation hospital in the village of Cleveland.
The rehab hospital will provide specialized, rehabilitative care to about 650 patients annually who are living with disabling injuries or illnesses such as strokes, brain injuries, hip fractures, spinal injuries and more. It brings with it about 100 new local jobs as well.
The 87,000-square-foot retail space that houses Ross Dress for Less, Harbor Freight Tools and Dunham’s Sports recently went on the market for $7.46 million.
Harbor Freight Tools was the first to move into the former Shopko site on Calumet Avenue, opening at its doors in February 2022.
Dunham’s opened at the site in December 2022.
Each of the three tenants has long-term leases, so they aren’t likely to close if a new owner buys the building.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels also confirmed a new Pizza Hut is under construction at the corner of the slightly more than 7-acre site.
