20:00 Southwell: Champions Day on Sky Sports Handicap (6 furlongs)
While the Clive Cox-trained Crafty Spirit looks likely to be sent off as a somewhat tentative favourite under Jim Crowley, we’ve got our eyes on one of his closest market challengers, who might just provide a better-value option.
White Umbrella has proved to be a much more convincing performer on the all-weather than she has been on turf, and indeed the last two of her four career successes have both been on Wolverhampton’s synthetic track.
After three fruitless attempts on turf in September, she returns to the all-weather surface here at Southwell, where she will also be sporting blinkers for the first time.
The five-year-old mare carries top weight here, but is only one pound higher than her last winning mark in a low-key contest which should not take much winning for a horse of her quality.
Trainer Christopher Kellet boasts a very impressive 93 units of profit when having just the one runner at a Flat meeting and White Umbrella can upgrade that statistic further as he should strip fitter for those three turf outings last month.
Jockey PJ McDonald has ridden this mare a couple of times in the last two months, and arrives in the saddle fresh from making the frame on five of his last six rides, and has won three of his last 15, and White Umbrella could well be his best chance to add to that tally on Tuesday evening.
Suggested Bet: White Umbrella in the 20:00 at Southwell
