The ‘Big Three’ is officially no more.
The three-way rivalry was arguably the greatest ever seen in tennis history as the legendary trio dominated the ATP Tour for 20 years.
Together they won 66 Grand Slam titles (and Djokovic may still add to this) and spent 947 weeks (just over 18 years) at the top of the world rankings.
But which of the titans finished with the best head-to-head record against their ‘Big Three’ rivals? And who has the best ‘Big Three’ head-to-head record at Grand Slams and on different surfaces?
Now it’s all said and done, who ended with the best head-to-head record against their ‘Big Three’ rivals?
Djokovic holds winning records against both his rivals, but does not have the best overall combined winning percentage.
That record just goes to Nadal with 53% after he went 53-47 against Djokovic and Federer combined. Nadal had a losing record against Djokovic (29-31) but finished way ahead against Federer (24-16) despite losing seven of their last eight meetings.
Djokovic’s winning percentage against Nadal and Federer combined was 52.7% (58-52 win-loss record). He also had the best combined record in ‘Big Three’ finals of 59.6% (28-19 win-loss record).
Federer finished with losing records against Djokovic (23-27) and Nadal (16-24) and a winning percentage of 43.3%. He also lost more finals than he won (16-27) against his two great rivals.
Player | v Djokovic | v Nadal | v Federer | Combined W/L record |
Novak Djokovic | – | 31-29 | 27-23 | 58-52 (52.7%) |
Rafael Nadal | 29-31 | – | 24-16 | 53-47 (53%) |
Roger Federer | 23-27 | 16-24 | – | 39-51 (43.3%) |
For Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, it was always the Grand Slams where it counted most.
The trio met 49 times combined across the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open, including in 23 finals.
Among those finals were the Wimbledon 2008 epic between Nadal and Federer, which ended in darkness, and the 2012 Australian Open final between Nadal and Djokovic, which is the longest-ever major final at five hours and 53 minutes.
Nadal has the best winning percentage in ‘Big Three’ matches at Grand Slams, winning 66%. That is helped by his almost impeccable record at the French Open against both Djokovic (8-2 win-loss record) and Federer (6-0 win-loss record).
Nadal finished with 21 wins and 11 losses against the ‘Big Three’ at Grand Slams, with seven of the defeats in finals.
Djokovic holds the next best winning percentage of 51%, going 8-6 in major finals against Nadal and Federer.
Federer’s head-to-head record against his ‘Big Three’ rivals at Grand Slams was not great, winning just 10 of 31 matches. He also suffered defeat in 10 of 14 finals against Nadal and Djokovic.
Federer’s only victories in ‘Big Three’ finals were at Wimbledon in 2006 and 2007, the 2007 US Open, and the 2017 Australian Open.

The ‘Big Three’ had some epic matches on all surfaces, but who got the better of their rivals on hard, clay and grass?
On clay, there is unsurprisingly one clear winner.
Nadal finished with a 76% winning rate on his favourite surface against Federer and Djokovic.
Federer had a tough time against Djokovic and Nadal on clay, winning just six of 24 encounters and going 2-12 in finals, including losing in four French Open finals to Nadal.
Against Nadal he finished with a 2-14 losing record on clay and never beat him at the French Open.
Djokovic fared slightly better as his clay win-loss record against the ‘Big Three’ was 13-24 and his record in clay finals was 5-9. He beat Nadal twice at the French Open.
On hard courts it was Djokovic who was superior.
Djokovic finished with a winning percentage of 62% on hard courts against Nadal and Federer and went 19-9 in finals.
Nadal largely came off second best against Djokovic and Federer in finals on hard courts, losing 16 of 21.
It’s a tighter margin on grass where there were only 12 ‘Big Three’ matches played in total.
Federer went 4-4, Nadal 3-5, and Djokovic 5-3.
Most significantly, though, Djokovic won four of his five grass finals against Nadal and Federer. All of those victories were at Wimbledon, including the dramatic 2019 final when Djokovic saved two championship points against Federer.
