Conducted by system design interview prep experts System Design School, the study examined the frequency of tech-specific skills mentioned in job listings across the state.

The findings revealed that Microsoft Office was cited in 149 job postings in Pennsylvania, making it a fundamental requirement across various industries. This software suite’s versatility and widespread use ensure it remains an essential skill for professionals.

Nationally, Microsoft Office also tops the list of most wanted tech skills, with 14,000 job postings requiring experience with the software. This indicates a consistent demand for proficiency in basic productivity tools across the United States.

Sheldon Chi, ex-Google engineer and creator of System Design School, commented on the importance of these findings. “In today’s competitive job market, having the right tech skills is more important than ever, and this data provides clear evidence of the skills employers are seeking,” he said. Chi emphasized that understanding which skills are in demand can significantly improve job prospects and career trajectories.

The study’s results highlight the persistent need for fundamental skills like Microsoft Office and Excel, which are indispensable across various roles and industries. Additionally, proficiency in software troubleshooting and Agile methodologies can set candidates apart in more specialized technical positions. The ability to manage projects efficiently with Scrum and tools like Jira is also crucial in today’s fast-paced tech environments.

Chi encouraged professionals to focus on these areas to enhance their employability and career growth. “By continuously updating skillsets and staying informed about industry trends, people can position themselves as a valuable asset to potential employers,” he added.

The methodology of the study involved scraping job postings from Glassdoor using the keyword “tech.” The analysis included a sample of up to 900 tech-related jobs per state, sorted by relevance, and counted the frequency of specific skills mentioned.
