Patrick Mahomes’ hold on the No. 1 spot in every quarterback ranking is getting stronger after he claimed the top slot in a poll of his peers.
Per a survey of more than 103 active players conducted by ESPN, Mahomes ranked No. 1 among quarterbacks with 87 first-place votes and 291 total points.
Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson (124 points), Joe Burrow (51) Josh Allen (39) and Aaron Rodgers (32) rounded out the top five.
Mahomes was voted first or second on 99 out of 103 players surveyed. It’s certainly a high percentage, but there are questions to be asked of the players who don’t think he’s one of the two best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Perhaps the argument is last season was a down year by Mahomes’ usual standard. It’s hard to pin that on him when his teammates led the league in dropped passes.
The playoffs were business as usual for Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. He threw for 1,051 yards with six touchdowns, one interception and completed 69.8 percent of his attempts to lead the Chiefs to a second straight Super Bowl win.
Of course, the NFL Top 100 voting earlier this summer told us there wasn’t unanimous praise for Mahomes. He finished fourth on that list, behind Tyreek Hill, Lamar Jackson and Christian McCaffrey.
Jackson’s second MVP award helped him land at No. 2 on the ESPN survey of the best quarterbacks by a healthy margin. There were questions about his long-term viability after two injury-plagued seasons in 2021 and 2022.
After securing a five-year extension from the Baltimore Ravens last offseason, Jackson threw for a career-high 3,678 yards, ran for 821 yards and accounted for 29 touchdowns to help the Ravens earn the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
Burrow’s placement is notable because injuries wrecked his 2023 campaign. He got off to a slow start due to a calf injury and missed the final seven games due to a wrist injury.
There was a five-game stretch from Weeks 5-10 where Burrow looked like his usual self. He threw for 1,480 yards, 12 touchdowns and completed 74.1 percent of his attempts. The Cincinnati Bengals went 4-1 during that span, including wins over the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills.
Despite playing just four snaps last season due to a torn Achilles and entering his age-40 season in 2024, Rodgers remains highly regarded by his peers.
Allen remains a polarizing player for some reason. He finished fourth in the best quarterback vote, but also led the voting for most overrated quarterback.
One NFC West player cited Allen’s turnovers as the primary issue. While he does lead the league with 102 turnovers since entering the NFL in 2018, his 221 touchdowns accounted for during that span is second only to Mahomes (231) during that span. No other quarterback has more than 186.
