PITTSBURGH—With numerous legends throughout program history, including 10 Pro Football Hall of Famers and 25 College Football Hall of Famers, Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports says the Panthers are above the rest in his Mount Rushmore of college football programs.
DeArdo based his rankings on each program’s most successful NFL players, individual career records, Hall of Fame/NFL 100 All-Time Team honors and lasting impact on football. He topped Pitt’s Mount Rushmore with quarterback Dan Marino, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, defensive tackle Aaron Donald and running back Tony Dorsett.
Boasting 10 Pro Football Hall of Famers—with more on the way soon—Pitt gave DeArdo many legendary Panthers to choose from. Among them, cornerback Darrelle Revis, tight end Mike Ditka, offensive linemen Jimbo Covert and Russ Grimm, running back Curtis Martin, linebackers Rickey Jackson and Joe Schmidt, as well as defensive lineman Chris Doleman, were all in consideration when constructing his Mount Rushmore.
Following Pitt, he included other top college football programs in USC, Miami, Alabama and Syracuse, who rounded out the top five spots in that order. Also making the list was Florida State, SMU, Penn State, Notre Dame and Ohio State as No. 6-10, respectively.
