CLEVELAND, Ohio – The OHSAA girls tennis season began on Friday. Before things really get going across cleveland.com’s seven-county coverage area in Northeast Ohio, it’s time to recognize some individual standouts.
The cleveland.com tennis Preseason All-Stars include those expected to be among the top players in Northeast Ohio this season.
Here’s a look at the team:
Elena Fleming, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Senior
As a junior, Fleming went 27-6 at No. 1 singles. She won both the Crown Conference championship (for a third time) and the Solon sectional title. She qualified for the Division I state tournament and was named the 2023 USTA Diane McNeal Jr. Sportsmanship Award winner.
Dani Forte, Hawken, Junior
Last season, Forte finished with a singles record of 14-4, was runner-up (to McNeal) at the NE Ohio district and qualified for state in DII. She returns as a two-time state qualifier, placing fourth in doubles and earning first team All-Ohio as a freshman.
Abigail Lynch, Gilmour Academy, Sophomore
After a strong freshman season, Lynch will look to add to it in her second campaign. The anchor to the Lancers lineup, she posted an 18-4 record at No. 1 singles and earned a trip to state in DII.
Anna Mancino, Magnificat, Senior
A two-time state qualifier (’22 doubles and ’23 singles) in Division I, Mancino finished her junior season 23-11. As a sophomore, she placed fourth at state in doubles and earned first-team All-Ohio.
Brooke McNeal, Kenston, Senior
Unbeaten in the regular season as a junior, McNeal earned second-team All-Ohio honors in Division II, finishing with a singles record of 17-2. She was the Western Reserve Conference Player of the Year (third time), won the NE Ohio district title, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, where she fell to eventual runner-up, Martha Thompson, of Cincinnati Indian Hill. She returns as a two-time state qualifier.
Haley Slay, Archbishop Hoban, Senior
Slay returns as a three-time state singles qualifier in Division II and is one of the top recruits in the area. As a junior, she finished the season 20-3, won the Wooster Sectional title, and placed third at districts. She advanced to the state quarterfinals and earned second-team All-Ohio honors.
Rida Tahir, Laurel, Sophomore
As a freshman, Tahir compiled a record of 16-5 at No. 1 singles. She earned a state tournament berth in D-II, where she dropped a tough first-round match (7-5, 4-6, 6-4).
Corinne Daniels, Magnificat, Senior
Playing mostly No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Blue Streaks, Daniels finished with an overall record of 20-16, and qualified for the state doubles tournament in D-I.
Ally Haynes, Highland, Senior
Last season, Haynes finished the season 14-8 at No. 1 singles and won the Suburban League-American title. She earned her first trip to the D-I state singles tournament.
Valeria Kislyansky, Hawken, Sophomore
As a freshman, Kislyansky impressed as both a singles (7-4, No. 2) and doubles player. She paired with Hayley Garber to win the Solon Sectional title and finished as runner-up at the NE Ohio District to qualify for state in D-II.
Amber Korey, Avon Lake, Senior
In each of her previous three seasons, Korey has played No. 1 singles for the Shoregals and claimed All-Southwestern conference honors. Last season, she paired with sister Autumn to qualify for the state doubles tournament in D-I.
Autumn Korey, Avon Lake, Senior
The No. 3 singles champion in the SWC conference, Korey lost only two matches last season. She paired with her sister Amber to win the Medina Sectional and placed runner-up at the NE Ohio District to qualify for state.
Kamy Milano, Aurora, Junior
Undefeated at No. 2 singles last season, Milano returns as a state qualifier (doubles). She won the Suburban League-American title at No. 2 to earn first team honors.
Molly Williams, Magnificat, Junior
As a sophomore, Williams lost only two singles matches at No. 3 for the Blue Streaks (27-8 overall) and paired with Daniels to qualify for the D-I state tournament in doubles.
