The business of the NFL is booming. Five or ten years ago it would have been unthinkable that quarterbacks would be making over $45 million a year and wide receivers would be making over $30 million a season.
On the first Monday of June, WR Justin Jefferson signed a contract that will have him averaging $35 million a season, the most among non-QBs in the league. For reference, QB Tom Brady never had an Average Per Year (APY) of more than $25 million.
Just a few years ago, the Cleveland Browns signed DE Myles Garrett to a huge contract extension that included $100 million in guaranteed money. At the time, it was the most guaranteed to a defender and had the highest APY of any defender.
After Jefferson’s deal, Garrett’s $25 million a year now falls outside of the Top 15 of non-quarterbacks and has him as the seventh highest-paid defender. With WRs Ja’Marr Chase, Ceedee Lamb and Tee Higgins seeking big deals, among others, Garrett could fall outside of the Top 20 by the time the season ends.
The Browns have their star defender under contract for three more seasons but an extension could be possible as early as next offseason. While Garrett has made it clear that Cleveland is home, the player and his representatives will likely expect to be paid market value sooner rather than later.
