The Houston Texans have put together an all-star kind of roster heading into the 2024 NFL season. Betting that they have a Super Bowl window open, general manager Nick Caserio has added several Pro Bowlers to the gang this offseason plus a few other very-solid underrated competitors.
As loaded and young as their roster looks on paper, their very-best player is arguably still veteran left tackle Laremy Tunsil. According to an analysis by Sam Monson at Pro Football Focus, Tunsil is the 44th-best player in the league this year. That makes him the only Houston player who made the cut for his list of the top 50.
“One of the best pass-protecting left tackles in the game, Laremy Tunsil posted the second-best PFF pass-blocking grade among offensive tackles in 2023, trailing only future Hall-of-Famer Tyron Smith. Tunsil can protect his quarterback with the best, but his run blocking isn’t at the same level as the other top tackles in the game, which explains the gap between him and some others at the position in these rankings.”
Mediocre run blocking aside, Tunsil has made the Pro Bowl in four of the five years he’s played for the Texans since he was traded from the Dolphins. The only exception was in 2021 when injuries kept him on the sidelines for all but five games. If you take out that year, Tunsil has never posted a pass-blocking grade lower than 85.4 for Houston.
Looking ahead, Tunsil will turn 30 years old in a couple of weeks, which is when many pro athletes begin to see a decline in their performance. However, there are plenty of exceptions to that rule and as of yet Tunsil has not shown any signs of falling off. He will be under contract with Houston through the 2026 season.
