The Las Vegas Raiders added veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew in free agency earlier this offseason and he is now competing with second-year signal-caller Aidan O’Connell for the starting job going into training camp.
Many out there believe the fact that Minshew inked a two-year, $25 million deal is a sign that Las Vegas plans on having him start, or that he at least has the edge to start, but it remains to be seen if that is actually the case.
Whatever the case may be, Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon recently pegged Minshew as the team’s biggest potential bust for 2024. Here are his thoughts:
On one hand, it’s fair to acknowledge that Gardner Minshew II is probably a caretaker option at best. Maybe the Raiders think Aidan O’Connell can be a long-term answer, but the more likely scenario is Las Vegas targets a top quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft.
As long as Raiders fans understand what Minshew is going in (a career backup who can be a serviceable starter but not a true difference-maker), the bar is not high for him to be considered a success.
If Minshew wins the job or gets it eventually and plays good enough to help the Raiders end their two-year playoff drought, the signing can be viewed positively.
However, if he plays poorly and the Raiders miss the playoffs, or if he can’t grab the starting job at some point because O’Connell is simply better, this signing will be a bust.
