High school boys basketball continues even as the new year starts. The nation’s top programs continue to stamp their dominance over the opposition through games played within various tournaments.
Of the great teams competing nationwide, 25 have separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Here are the elite squads based on the first On3 Composite Team Rankings for 2025.
The On3 Composite High School Basketball Team Rankings is a proprietary algorithm that compiles rankings listed in the public domain by respected High School media and data companies. It includes Massey, Max Preps, Cal Preps, ESPN, and SI, creating the industry’s most comprehensive and geographically balanced High School Team Ranking.
The Explorers are the only team in the top five of the On3 Massey, MaxPreps, ESPN, and SI rankings. Those ratings made them the nation’s top team. However, Columbus is going through a slump after losing to Long Island Lutheran and Link Academy in the Jordan Holiday Classic. Despite losing to the Lions, Cameron Boozer had 27 points and seven rebounds, while Caleb Gaskins added 12. The Explorers can bounce back against Riviera Prep on Jan. 10.
The Mustangs edged St. John Bosco in overtime, 56-55, to win the Platinum Division championship at The Classic at Damien. Brayden Burries led the way for Roosevelt with 24 points. After that win against the Braves, the Mustangs strung three more victories in the Hoophall West High School Invitational. Stephen Singleton’s crew defeated Coronado (NV), Sandra Day O’Connor (AZ), and Layton Christian to improve to 18-1. The Mustangs return to action against Francis Parker on Jan. 7.
High school boys basketball’s third-best team earned the Hoophall West Invitational Championship by defeating De La Salle 58-44. Duke commit Nikolas Khamenia paced the Wolverines with 14 points, five rebounds, and six assists, while Amir Jones added 14 points and a steal. That victory improved Harvard-Westlake’s record to 18-1, and they will face Chaminade on Jan. 8.
Last year, the Rams defeated McEachern for their first Georgia Class 7A basketball state championship. A year later, Grayson continued to lord over the Indians via a 46-38 victory. Despite start guard Caleb Holt sidelined, converting eight three-pointers helped Grayson win their 12th consecutive home game. Meanwhile, the Rams will carry a 13-1 record to their Jan. 7 game against South Gwinnett.
The Bears devoured the Stevens Falcons, improving their record to 19-2 and extending their winning streak to eight games. The Falcons couldn’t stop Camden Cowgill, who had 24 points, eight assists, and six steals in the win. Meanwhile, Kingston Flemings had 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while Talon Todd added 13 points and three steals. Brennan will continue their season against the Taft Raiders on Jan. 7.
After their overtime loss to Roosevelt, the Braves are on a three-game winning streak after participating in the Hoophall West. In their last game, St. John Bosco edged Coronado, 62-61, improving their record to 17-1. Elzie Harrington had a game-high 29 points with three assists and three steals, while Christian Collins added 13 points. The Braves continue their 2024-25 high school boys basketball season against Santa Margarita on Jan. 8.
After losing to eventual champions Harvard-Westlake in the Hoophall West, the Pumas defeated Sunnyslope and Duncanville for back-to-back wins. Highly ranked prospect Koa Peat had his way against the Panthers, finishing with 25 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists. That victory improved Perry’s record to 13-1, and they can extend their winning streak against Tucson High on Jan. 7.
The Eagles, the top team in the On3 Massey Rankings, trampled on Southeastern Prep 81-39. Hakeem Weems had 16 points and eight rebounds, while CJ Ingram added 15 and 7 for Montverde Academy. Trent Sisley joined the rout with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Eagles are at 8-2 and will compete in Indiana’s LaPorte Invitational. Montverde Academy will face Legacy Early on Jan. 10 and CIA Bella Vista the following day.
After losing to Harvard-Westlake in the Hoophall West Invitational, high school boys basketball’s ninth-best team dominated Chaminade 66-45. Nykolas Lewis had 21 points, six rebounds, and two steals, while Derek Dixon added 18 points and four rebounds. Gonzaga will continue their season against DeMatha on Jan. 7.
After back-to-back losses to Dream City Christian Nation and Prolific Prep of Napa, Utah Prep rattled off six consecutive victories. Their latest victory was an 80-63 victory over Faith Family Academy. Highly ranked prospect AJ Dybantsa posted an impressive stat line of 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and a block.
