Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen delivered a remarkable performance throughout the 2024 NFL season, showcasing his talent and leadership that ultimately earned him the league’s MVP award. Despite his incredible achievements, Pro Football Focus (PFF) surprised many by not placing him at the top of their prestigious top-101 players list for the season. In fact, Allen didn’t even crack the top five, coming in at No. 6 behind fellow quarterbacks Joe Burrow (No. 4) and Lamar Jackson (No. 1).
Josh Allen’s 2024 campaign was nothing short of spectacular. Leading the Bills to a 13-4 record, he commanded the second-highest-scoring offense in the NFL, averaging an impressive 30.9 points per game. The team consistently dominated their opponents, clinching the division title just after the halfway mark of the season. Allen’s growth was evident, especially in his ability to minimize turnovers, a factor that had previously been a point of criticism. In 2024, he posted a career-low interception total of just six and recorded only 11 turnovers overall. His improved decision-making was a testament to the well-coordinated offense under the guidance of offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
This newfound discipline didn’t come at the expense of his signature playmaking. Allen maintained his aggressive style without the risky throws that often led to turnovers in previous seasons. In fact, only five of his 17 regular-season games featured an interception, and notably, he remained flawless in ball security throughout the Bills’ three playoff games. This balance of caution and brilliance solidified his position as one of the league’s elite quarterbacks.
Despite these accomplishments, PFF placed Allen at No. 6 on their list, trailing behind Burrow and Jackson. According to PFF, “Allen earned his first NFL MVP award by ranking third among qualified quarterbacks in PFF grade and leading that group with a 93.6 rushing grade and 43 big-time throws. He is the first quarterback in PFF history to earn a 90.0-plus grade in five straight seasons, surpassing Tom Brady, who did it four times in a row from 2015 to 2018. On top of his amazing playmaking ability, Allen recorded a career-low 2.6% turnover-worthy play rate.”
These statistics show just how dominant Allen was, both through the air and on the ground. His dynamic rushing ability added another dimension to the Bills’ offense, making him a dual-threat nightmare for defenses. Yet, PFF’s ranking reflected their comprehensive evaluation criteria, which included other metrics where Burrow and Jackson excelled.
Although Allen didn’t secure the No. 1 spot on PFF’s list, his 2024 season will be remembered as one of the finest of his career. More importantly, his evolution into a smarter, more calculated playmaker positions the Buffalo Bills as serious contenders for the 2025 season. With an MVP winner leading the charge, Buffalo is well-equipped to pursue the ultimate prize—a Super Bowl victory.
