A sign goes up inside the MCG saying the total attendance of 351,104 for this Test is a new record for the ground.
They’ve been treated to an absolute all-timer of a Test match.
Still plenty of twists left in the tail as well.
What a session for Australia!
We’ve gone from having all three options on the cards to start the day to the only results likely being a draw or an Australian win.
They’ve not only kept the lid on India’s scoring with some superb bowling, but they’ve prized out three wickets – Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and the big fish, Virat Kohli.
All the bowlers have been excellent, even the part time medium pace of Mitchell Marsh.
Australia’s hopes of winning probably rest on the bat of Yashasvi Jaiswal at this point.
He’s India’s best batter and he’s eaten up 83 balls to score 14 runs, that would bring a tear to Cheteshwar Pujara’s eyes.
He’ll be joined by Rishabh Pant after lunch and we’ll all officially go on Sunil Gavaskar watch to see if we get another all-time rant.
India with 307 runs to win off 65.5 overs, Australia needing seven wickets to take a 2-1 lead in the series with a Test remaining.
Oh no Virat, what have you done?!
Starc bowls one wide of off stump, moving away from Kohli, who goes for a big drive and is caught in the slips yet again.
Unbelievable. He just keeps getting out in exactly the same way.
That is such a poor shot, particularly with lunch so close, in fact that wicket ends the session.
Kohli’s got to go for just five off 29 deliveries. The two OGs, Kohli and Rohit, have both failed again.
Spin for the first time this innings as Nathan Lyon comes on for a trundle.
Will the GOAT extract any turn from this pitch? He’s going to come around the wicket to Jaiswal.
Lyon is bowling from the Shane Warne Stand end, but I think there’s more rough for him to aim at if he bowls from the Members’ Stand end.
He’s got mid off on the rope for Jaiswal, who drives the second ball of the over right down to that very fielder.
Lyon comes over the wicket to bowl at Kohli. Travis Head is in close on the leg side.
Kohli whips the next ball past the legs of Head for a single.
Lyon draws a few defensive strokes from Jaiswal to end the over.
Starc has his first crack at Virat now. You know he’ll angle the ball across Kohli, hoping to entice him into driving.
The first ball is a straight one which Virat defends into the leg side. 141.6 km/h.
It must be said there have been no signs of that back niggle Starc had late on day three. It looks like he’s got his rhythm back.
Starc trying to tempt Kohli, who has so far left the ball very well.
It’s another maiden for Starc, two in a row now as we close in on lunch.
I reckon we’ve got time for two more overs in this session.
Marsh continues to work away at Kohli. Carey up to the stumps.
Starts with two full ones and then one that is on a back of a length. Kohli defends all three relatively comfortably.
Carey goes back, and Marsh bowls one outside off stump that keeps very low. Another thing for these batters to keep in mind.
Carey back up to the stumps to finish the over. Marsh is trying his best to tempt Virat into a drive. You know Virat loves to feel bat on ball.
Marsh goes down leg side to end the over and they run a single as Carey is unable to pouch the ball.
Replays show that could’ve been a stumping chance. Kohli’s back foot rose up as he lost his balance, but that’s an incredibly hard task for Carey to try grab a ball like that at Marsh’s place.
Cummins has pulled himself after a six-over spell that yielded two wickets for just seven runs.
Starc’s got to keep a lid on it here. Australia has built up some excellent pressure so far.
Kohli gets his right thumb taped up. That’s the thumb that was struck by a Cummins delivery earlier.
Starc continuing to operate outside Jaiswal’s off stump, trying to invite a booming drive and potentially an edge. Jaiswal repeatedly leaves the ball alone. He’s showing immense concentration, the 23-year-old.
The final ball of the over draws a back-footed defensive stroke from Jaiswal. It’s a maiden for Starc upon his return.
Marsh gets his first crack at Virat now.
The first ball is on Kohli’s hips and neatly worked away to fine leg and they run a two. Good running that time between these two.
Carey comes up to the stumps again after a couple of deliveries.
The crowd has crept up to 51,371 according to Fox Cricket’s coverage. It’ll continue to grow as the day wears on.
Another tidy over from Marsh, just the two off it.
Cummins strays onto Kohli’s pads and is flicked down to fine leg. Virat’s account is officially open. There’s a massive cheer around the ‘G.
Cummins goes around the wicket to Jaiswal. This is the one Australia will really want.
The first ball is awkwardly defended to gully by Jaiswal. He’s 12 off 70 deliveries, it’s the same strike rate Boland had in his batting innings.
Cummins strays onto the pads and Jaiswal works him into the on side for a single.
Virat’s got a steely look in his eyes. None of that will matter if he doesn’t leave balls outside off stump.
Another full ball from Cummins at Kohli’s pads and he’s whipped away to deep square leg for a single.
Cummins goes short again to end the over and it’s punched off the back foot into the covers by Jaiswal. That’s a more confident stroke.
Scott Boland’s six-over spell is done and Cummins throws the ball to Mitchell Marsh.
Carey starts up to the stumps again with Jaiswal on strike to start the over.
Australia banking on Jaiswal losing his concentration here. He’s got to lock in, Yashasvi.
Marsh’s first ball is horrible, it’s short and wide, and Carey does an excellent job to parry it. There’s a man out at deep backward point for a cut shot in the air. He’s three quarters of the way to the boundary.
BEATEN! Marsh seams one across Jaiswal after pitching it on middle stump. That’s where he needs to be. 134 km/h that delivery, not bad.
BEATEN AGAIN! Another seed from Marsh! He’s really bending his back here.
A maiden over to start with for Marsh, good stuff. That’s three straight maidens now for India.
Cummins starts with two balls on middle and off, which are defended solidly by Virat.
The third one is straighter and Virat flicks it into the leg side for no run.
Cummins gets the fourth to spit up at Kohli from a decent length on off stump, and it crashes into Virat’s top hand. It’s tough out there, folks.
Cummins in this mood is just about untouchable. It’s another maiden from Australia’s captain, his third of the innings.
Boland continues to Jaiswal, whose wicket is now doubly important for both India and Australia.
These two had that horrible run out on day three. India had better hope their communication is on point today. No BBQs please, Virat.
Carey has come back up to the stumps to keep Jaiswal in his crease.
BEATEN! Boland continues to nibble and seams one away from Jaiswal and beats the bat outside off stump.
You can see why Jaiswal is trying to walk down the wicket at every opportunity.
A maiden over gives Cummins a full over at Virat here, who is yet to face a ball.
After dismissing Rohit, Cummins is right on the money to Rahul
The first two balls at India’s No.3 force two defensive strokes on off stump, and eventually it was the same ball that got him out.
He rarely gives you a bad ball to attack, does Cummins.
Cummins doing for Australia what Bumrah did for India on day four.
Australia take a HUGE step towards a victory here.
Cummins does it again!
Another excellent delivery from Australia’s captain on that off stump line, and Rahul nicks it and is caught by Usman Khawaja in the slips.
Virat Kohli comes out to huge boos and huge ‘KOHLI, KOHLI, KOHLI’ chants.
Australia has its first wicket and it’s captain on captain crime as Pat Cummins sends Rohit Sharma packing!
It’s the first real loose stroke Rohit has played all day and he pays the price. Another single-figure score for the skipper.
Cummins pitched that one on off stump, and Rohit attempted to whip it extravagantly through the leg side, only succeeding in getting a leading edge and it flew to Marsh at gully.
Marsh initially spills it, but grabs it at the second attempt.
Rohit’s nine runs took 40 deliveries. KL Rahul is the new man in at No.3.
Boland gets a crack at Rohit now. He’s over the wicket to the right-handed Indian captain.
BEATEN! Excellent from Boland. Pitches one a hair outside off stump and moves it away ever so slightly, beating Rohit’s defensive prod.
Boland strays onto Rohit’s pads and is worked through midwicket for a single. In form or out of form, you’re not getting Rohit out with that line.
Boland comes around the wicket to Jaiswal now. Three slips and a gully in.
Gets a little too full and Jaiswal drives him straight down the ground, doesn’t quite time it though, so has to settle for two.
Mid off is wide, inviting Jaiswal to drive down the ground.
Alex Carey comes up to the stumps to pin Jaiswal to his crease now, after he’s repeatedly walked down the track to meet Boland’s bowling.
Boland bowls a real wicket-keeper killer, one back of a length, and somehow Carey takes it up near his chest. Lovely keeping that. That delivery was 134 km/h.
Carey decides that’s enough for him keeping up though, and moves back for the final ball of the over, which is left alone by Jaiswal.
So far, so good for India.
They’re 0-22 after 15 overs, going at a run rate of 1.46, which goes against every attacking instinct Rohit and Jaiswal have.
It’s not about runs right now though, it’s about staying out there and taking the shine off this new ball.
If these two are able to remain at the crease, they’ll be able to shift through the gears seamlessly.
It’s been an excellent start with the ball from Australia’s three seamers, who have all beaten the bats of both openers and asked plenty of questions.
No major demons in the pitch just yet, so Australia will have to earn every single one of these 10 wickets if they’re to pull out a win.
They’ve got 77 overs remaining to do so. India needs 318 runs to win. That’s a required run rate of 4.12, certainly a tough ask.
Scott Boland will continue what has been an excellent spell after drinks.
Cummins goes shorter and Rohit attempts to pull it to the boundary, only succeeds into pulling it into his cojones. Being out of form is tough, eh?
Cummins goes short again, and this time Rohit gets more bat on it, pulling it to fine leg. There are two men out on the fence behind square on the leg side waiting for one that’s skied.
He goes around the wicket to Jaiswal now and draws another defensive stroke. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Jaiswal defend this much in his short career.
Cummins back over the wicket to end the over, and Jaiswal defends into the off side. And we’ll have some drinks.
Where’s the live scoreboard gone please? Seems to have vanished..
