It’s known as the “most exciting two minutes in sports,” and it’s called that for a reason: The Kentucky Derby is thrilling. Every year, a group of horses compete in an entertaining race at Churchill Downs to begin Triple Crown season.
The 150th running of the illustrious Derby is set for Saturday, with post time scheduled for 6:57 p.m. ET. Not long after, one horse will be crowned champion.
It could end up being Fierceness, the betting favorite to win this year with 5-2 odds. However, it could also be any of the other 19 horses in the 2024 field.
Here’s everything else you need to know about this year’s Kentucky Derby.
2024 Kentucky Derby Odds, Lineup
4. Catching Freedom (8-1)
9. (Originally belonged to Encino, who was scratched)
15. Domestic Product (30-1)
16. Grand Mo the First (50-1)
Sometimes, it’s a heavy favorite that wins the Kentucky Derby. In other instances, it’s been a sleeper horse who crosses the finish line first. This year’s field features plenty of colts from both categories.
Fierceness has the best odds, and he’ll have a great chance to win. He’s been trained by Todd Pletcher, a two-time Derby winner with Super Saver (2010) and Always Dreaming (2017). Plus, Fierceness’ jockey will be John Velazquez, a three-time Derby champion himself.
Velazquez has ridden Animal Kingdom (2011), Always Dreaming (2017) and Authentic (2020) to victory at Churchill Downs.
Fierceness has won three of his first five races, including a victory at the Florida Derby in March. So he appears poised for another strong showing when he takes his post for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
Sierra Leone (3-1) and Catching Freedom (8-1) are the other top favorites to watch from this year’s field. Both have good odds to end up in the winner’s circle.
Over Sierra Leone’s first four races, he’s never finished worse than second. And he’s notched three victories during that span. The Chad Brown-trained colt is coming off a win at last month’s Blue Grass Stakes and will look to keep his positive momentum going on the Triple Crown stage.
Catching Freedom has a former Kentucky Derby champion trainer (Brad Cox) and a past Derby-winning jockey (Flavien Prat). Cox won with Mandaloun in 2021, while Prat rode Country House to victory in 2019.
As for sleepers, there are three horses with 20-1 odds to keep a closer eye on: Mystik Dan, Honor Marie and Resilience.
Of that trio, Honor Marie may have the best chance of a strong finish. He’s placed either first or second in four of his first five races, and he was the runner-up to Catching Freedom at the Louisiana Derby.
Honor Marie’s trainer, D. Whitworth Beckman, is a Louisville native who has never previously had a horse in the Kentucky Derby. So it would be a great story if the colt finishes first at Churchill Downs.
