If WHITE CHAPEL ROAD is in the same form as when making virtually all in a maiden at Brighton last time he might be able to dominate this small-field nursery. The Paul & Oliver Cole-trained colt landed the odds without too much fuss on that occasion, having contested the very valuable Convivial Maiden at York on his previous start. Pietro has already won a similar race over course and distance before a good second in another nursery at Haydock last time and looks the obvious threat.
Ralph Beckett’s ANNIVERSARY is entered in the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster next month and can set himself up for a possible tilt at that Group 1 contest by following up last month’s Newmarket debut success when he looked a good prospect in accounting for Aidan O’Brien’s Scandinavia by three quarters of a length. Glittering Legend has to give weight to his four rivals but can follow the selection home, with the form of his Goodwood maiden win earlier this month looking very strong.
Harry Charlton’s RICKSHAW promises to be well suited by this step up in trip to a mile and a quarter so is fancied to build on his recent debut effort when a keeping-on third at Pontefract. He can edge out Sir Lowry’s Pass who carries a penalty for winning quite a deep-looking novice at Goodwood early in the month. Both Lasting Love and Games People Play, runner-up in maidens at Goodwood and Carlisle respectively last time, have the form to play a leading part too.
MARK OF GOLD was last seen over hurdles but returns to the Flat on an attractive mark after winning at Goodwood last year so is fancied to continue the Gary & Josh Moore stable’s excellent record in the Apprentices’ Derby. The fillies at the foot of the weights, Thursday and Organic, both arrive in great form and can have a say in this competitive handicap, while course-and-distance winner Miller Spirit, a stablemate of the selection, completes the shortlist.
Andrew Balding’s handicap debutant WINSTON’S TIPPLE appeals as the type to progress further and he can follow up his recent Lingfield novice win at the chief expense of Qitaal who’s having a busy season but proved better than ever when winning by eight lengths in the mud at Chester last week. The thoroughly reliable Fast Steps has held his form well since winning at Newbury in July, finishing a creditable fourth at Windsor last time, and should also be in the mix again.
ARKHALIA FLYNN improved further when beaten three quarters of a length by Nap Hand at Haydock last time, going down fighting in a bid to land the hat-trick after wins at Ffos Las and Windsor last month, so he is taken to resume winning ways for Jack Channon. He can see off the challenge of Condor Pasa, who remains capable of better making only his second handicap start and drops back in trip, with Escape Act also considered after still looking green on his latest start.
HODLER ended his losing spell for local trainer Jim Boyle in emphatic fashion when beating Redredrobin, who opposes again, by two and a half lengths over this course and distance earlier in the month, and given he retains plenty of handicap scope, a subsequent 6 lb rise looks within his range. The selection may have most to fear from the three-year-olds Miguel and Come On You Spurs who were successful last time out at Musselburgh and Sandown respectively.
