The NHL Network continues to discuss which free agents are available a month from training camps and recently posted some notable defensemen still looking for a contract.
One of those names is former Pittsburgh Penguins defender and Stanley Cup winner Justin Schultz.
For the past two seasons, Schultz has skated with the Seattle Kraken, collecting 60 points in 143 games. The 33-year-old has scored 110 points in 163 games in the four seasons since he left Pittsburgh.
Schultz was a productive player with the Penguins from 2015 to 2020, netting 22 goals, 91 assists, and 113 points in 234 games. The Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017.
The former All-Rookie Team member (2013) is famous for signing late deals but has never been without a contract this late into the offseason.
Social media rumors suggest Schultz’s former team, the Edmonton Oilers, may be interested in offering him a PTO (professional tryout) or inking him into a cost-effective deal.
While under contract with the Kraken, he made $3 million a year. If the Oilers were interested, they’d have to find some room since they have only $170,833 left in cap space.
Of the six notable defensemen looking for a new team, Schultz is 33 and could be a productive player in the right environment, thanks to a veteran presence, including two championships.
