MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Coming off their fifth-consecutive NESCAC title, the Wesleyan women’s tennis team claimed top conference honors as Caitlyn Ferrante ’24 was named the 2023-24 NESCAC Player of the Year and Jackie Soloveychik ’24 became just the second women’s tennis player to earn the NESCAC’s Rookie of the Year award, the conference announced on Wednesday, May 8.
Ferrante becomes the third Cardinal in program history to claim the NESCAC’s top honor as Player of the Year, joining the likes of Nike Vesely ’23 and three-time Player of the Year honoree Eudice Chong ’18.
Just the second Rookie of the Year selection in program history, Soloveychik is the first Cardinal to earn the honor since Chong was named the Rookie of the Year for the 2014-15 season. Soloveychik claimed an impressive 17-1 overall record in singles play, going undefeated through the regular season until an unfortunate loss came against No. 12 Middlebury’s Gena Huang on April 14.
A two-time first team singles selection, having earned the honor in 2021-22, Ferrante continually climbed the program’s all-time leaderboard this season as she closed out the regular season and the NESCAC Tournament with 13 singles victories and 15 doubles wins with partner Sarah Youngberg ’26. Currently ranked fifth all-time in singles wins with 51, Ferrante also ranks fifth all-time in career victories with 105.
Youngberg, now a two-time All-NESCAC singles selection, having previously been named a second team singles selection in 2022-23, ran a 12-3 singles play record through the regular season and the NESCAC Tournament in the Cardinals’ No. 2 slot.
As the Cardinals’ No. 1 doubles pairing, Ferrante and Youngberg earned a first team doubles selection as combined for a 15-3 record. Ferrante is a three-time doubles selection as she earned the first team honors in 2021-22 and second team doubles honors in 2022-23.
Joining Ferrante and Youngberg as a doubles team selection, the No. 2 pairing of Leila Epstein ’26 and Soloveychik earned second team doubles honors as the pair also went 15-3 this season. Epstein is also a first team singles selection, earning honors in 2022-23.
The undefeated, NESCAC champion Cardinals will host the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament, facing either Stevens or Eastern Nazarene in the second round as they earned a first-round bye.
