The sports drama starring Zendaya, 27, as tennis champion at the center of a romantic triangle with two ambitious contenders, played by Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist was ranked number one.
The film scored an 88-percent approval rating by the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but didn’t do as well with fans, who gave it a 76-percent.
Challengers took the day with slightly more than $15 million in ticket sales.
Debuting in second place was the faith-based Unsung Hero produced by a branch of Lionsgate focusing on Christian films.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire held strong in third place.
The sci-fi adventure has been filling seats for five weeks and continues to enjoy strong ticket sales. It earned $7.2 million over the weekend, adding to the global total of $519.3 million.
Civil War, starring Kirsten Dunst as one of a team of journalists embedded with military factions in a divided America, dropped to fourth place after two weeks at number one.

Boy Kills World debuted in 10th place. The action adventure stars Bill Skarsgård as Boy, a young man who loses his hearing and ability to speak after his family is murdered in what is known as the culling in the dystopian world in which he lives.
The revenge story opened in fewer than two thousand theaters and earned $1.67 million its first week at the box office.
