Many 2025 recruits are trimming down their recruiting lists as summer circuits wind down, and BYU made the cut for one over the weekend. 6-foot-8 forward Michael Simcoe included BYU in his final 7 along with Washington, Cal, Northwestern, Santa Clara, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara.
Simcoe is 3-Star forward that preps in Glendale, Arizona. Simcoe hasn’t publicly reported an offer from BYU, but sources have told me that BYU has indeed offered Simcoe a scholarship. Simcoe doesn’t put much on social media and hasn’t reported all his offers, hence why Washington and Northwestern are in his final 7 despite 247 Sports not listing the offers. 247 Sports rates him at the #134 player in the 2025 class.
Simcoe is primarily a four man that can shoot the 3, has plus athleticism, and plays extremely physical. “Motor” is a word that gets overused, but Simcoe is one of the most active high school basketball players I’ve seen. His motor has a lot of similarities to Richie Saunders. Below is how 247 Sports national analyst Eric Bossi described Simcoe after his big performance at Section 7 in Arizona in late June.
“First of all, it would be almost impossible to find a more intense player in high school. Maybe the most intense high school player I’ve ever seen was Tyler Hansbrough and Simcoe brings that “Psycho T” type of energy to the floor. He’s physical, makes shots, leads his teammates and just gets so much done. There’s just so much to like with this guy and when he’s on the floor, there is no off button for his motor.”
BYU is going after 2025 guys that include AJ Dybantsa, JJ Mandaquit, Xavion Staton, Chamberlain Burgess, and others, and Simcoe brings a unique skill set with his ability to score at different spots and sheer effort. He has yet to set up an official visit to BYU but that date could come in the coming weeks.
Simcoe isn’t a one-and-done type player like Dybantsa and other players BYU is and will recruit, but he would be a perfect complement to those high-end guys. Simcoe is likely a 4-year player and his motor and physicality would be a perfect piece for Kevin Young to pair with the shorter-term players BYU will add. Richie Saunders isn’t a surefire NBA player, but he is one of BYU’s most valuable players and is essential to the program; Simcoe could have a similar impact at BYU.
