Alex de Minaur qualified for the 2024 ATP Finals late in the season. He’s the first Australian to earn a spot in the year-end championships after compatriot Lleyton Hewitt did it in 2004. De Minaur accumulated a total of 3,745 points in the Race to Turin, winning two titles in the season, but qualified in ninth after Novak Djokovic withdrew from the competition with injury.
De Minaur lost all three of his round-robin matches at the 2024 ATP Finals, eventually being eliminated against Taylor Fritz in his third match. He lost 6-3, 6-4 to Jannik Sinner, 6-2, 6-4 to Daniil Medvedev and 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to Fritz.
De Minaur reached his third consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final of the season at the 2024 US Open, and lost to the British No 1 Jack Draper 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.
The Aussie had not played any hardcourt events coming into New York due to the injury he sustained at Wimbledon. Prior to 2024, De Minaur had reached only Grand Slam quarter-final (US Open 2020), but he did the same at the French Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open this year.
Alex de Minaur was born on February 17, 1999 in Sydney, Australia. He and his family moved to Alicante, Spain when he was five years old and he split his time between Australia and Spain.
De Minaur’s father, Anibal, is from Uruguay and owns a number of car wash companies. His mother, Esther, is Spanish and spent her time bringing up the family. De Minaur has an older brother, Dominic, a younger brother, Daniel, and two younger sisters, Cristina and Sara. De Minaur speaks English, Spanish and French.
Alex de Minaur’s girlfriend is British player Katie Boulter. The two confirmed their relationship in 2021, and have played mixed doubles together, pairing up for 2023 Wimbledon.
In an interview with Esquire in January 2024, de Minaur said of his relationship with Boulter: “We live quite a private life, so very rarely will people find out about our life, if we don’t tell them. I think that’s probably not going to change. Whatever happens between us, if we want to share, we will share it, if not, then we won’t.”
They celebrated their fourth anniversary of dating in March 2024, with Boulter joking on Instagram that she was wearing a ring on the fourth finger of her left hand because it was the only one it fitted.
The pair have won titles on the same weekend on two occasions in 2024. In February, when De Minaur won Acapulco, Boulter won in San Diego. In June, De Minaur won in ‘s-Hertogenbosch while Boulter won in Nottingham.
According to his profile on the official ATP Tour website, De Minaur is 1.83m, or 6ft tall.
De Minaur won his first career ATP 500 singles title at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel Open in Acapulco. The Australian came from a set down to beat American Tommy Paul 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 27 minutes in the final.
This came less than 24 hours after he came from a set down to beat Denmark’s Holger Rune 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the semi-finals in two hours and 48 minutes in a match that ended close to 3 AM on Saturday morning in Acapulco.
Nine. The first three came in 2019, with his maiden win coming on home soil in Sydney, where he beat Andreas Seppi of Italy to win the title. He followed it up with his second Tour title in Atlanta, where he saw off Taylor Fritz in the final, and then a third in Zhuhai, where he beat Andy Murray early on and then Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the final.
His fourth title came at the start of 2021, when he won in Antalya, Turkey, beating Alexander Bublik in the final. De Minaur won on grass in Eastbourne the same year and added his sixth title in Atlanta in 2022.
De Minaur’s biggest title to date, his first at the ATP 500 level, came in March 2023 in Acapulco. Ranked 22nd at the time, he beat Tommy Paul in three sets in the final. He then repeated the feat a year later, beating Casper Ruud in the 2024 final to successfully defend a title for the first time in his career.
On June 16th, 2024, De Minaur won his ninth title, defeating Sebastian Korda in the ‘s-Hertogenbosch final.
The Aussie has additionally reached eight other ATP singles finals, including Los Cabos in 2023 where he lost to Tsitsipas.
De Minaur reached the first Masters 1000-level final of his career at the 2023 National Bank Open in Toronto, having never previously been beyond the round of 16 before. The Aussie was beaten by Jannik Sinner in the final.
The pair then met again in De Minaur’s next tour-level final, with Sinner beating the Australian in the final of the 2024 Rotterdam Open.
Yes. Alex de Minaur played in UTS3 which took place in Antwerp in 2021, winning the Zeus trophy on his debut. He beat Dan Evans, Pablo Andujar and Richard Gasquet to lift the title.
He also played UTS Oslo in February 2024, reaching the final where he lost to Andrey Rublev, in the first-ever UTS knock-out match contested by two former UTS champions.
De Minaur is coached by Adolfo Gutierrez while he’s also able to call on his mentor, Lleyton Hewitt, for advice. Former world No 1 and now Davis Cup captain Hewitt can often be seen in the De Minaur box and has helped steer him toward the top 10.
De Minaur’s best result is reaching the quarter-finals at the US Open in 2020 and 2024, as well as the quarter-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon in 2024.
He has also reached the fourth round at the Australian Open for the last three years in a row (2022, 2023, 2024).
De Minaur’s career-high ranking is No 6, a mark he reached in July 2024. This came after a brilliant season on grass, where he won the Libema Open without dropping a set, defeating Sebastian Korda 6-2, 6-4 in the final, and made the Wimbledon quarter-finals (before withdrawing from the match against Novak Djokovic).
