The Somerset Berkley takes down Mansfield to advance to the Final 4
The Somerset Berkley boys basketball team welcomed in Mansfield for the Division 2 Elite 8 contest. The Raiders came away with a 55-41 win.
It was a season to remember for several Greater Fall River high school teams in 2024.
From back-to-back state champions in softball, to a state title for a familiar field hockey teams, there were other teams who made school history with a run to the Final Four.
Here’s a look at the top four sports stories involving Herald News teams and other memorable moments from the past year:
The Raiders punched their ticket to the Final Four for the first time in school history. Seeded 12th, SBR blanked fifth-seed Essex North Shore and a talented 20th-seeded West Springfield. The Raiders’ run came to a halt against No. 1 seed Nauset in the Final Four, despite a 50-save performance by senior goalie Brandon Silva. SBR finished the year 18-3-2.
It was definitely one of the best runs on the hardwood floor in progam’s history by the Raiders. The last time SBR advanced their far in the state tournament was during the 2003 season. With wins against Burncoat, Canton and Mansfield, the stage was set against Malden Catholic in the Final 4. The Raiders lost a heartbreaker by two points to end their season at 21-3.
With a 4-2 win against Hingham, the Somerset Berkley field hockey advanced to the championship game for the first time since with back-to-back titles in 2018-19. In the Division 2 finals, the Raiders avenged last season loss against Norwood, 2-1. SBR (22-2) blanked its opponent 16 times during the season, including three of the five postseason games.
The Cardinals captured their sixth state title after blanking No. 2 seed Tyngsboro in the Division 4 state finals. It is the first time in school history that Case (23-1) has gone back-to-back since doing it in 1995-96. The Cardinals, who ended the season on a 17-game winning streak, moved into sole possession of fourth place with Massachusetts softball titles.

∎ Durfee field hockey player Kacey Curran shatters a 31-year school record for most goals in a career and set a new record in a season. She finished with 39 goals and eight assists.
∎ Durfee baseball advanced to the Elite 8
∎ Somerset Berkley softball advanced to the Elite 8
∎ Durfee field hockey wins Big 3 Conference title
∎ The Case outdoor track team concluded the spring season undefeated, making it back-to-back perfect season this year.
∎ The Diman girls indoor track team finished the season at league champs in the Mayflower Athletic Conference Large.
∎ Perry had an 8-0 mark, tossed three no-hitters, fanned 68 batters while walking just five for Diman baseball.
∎ Case’s Landon Cayton goes over the 1,000-point mark in his career.
∎ Durfee’s Jah Stephenson goes over the 1,000-point mark in his career.
∎ Westport’s Owen Boudria goes over the 1,000-point mark in his career.
