For 35 years, the magazine has annually evaluated about 5,000 hospitals in about 30 medical and surgical services. Using data from the hospitals and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, U.S. News evaluated each hospital based on “risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care, among other criteria,” according to the magazine.
U.S. News also ranked hospitals’ complex care in medical specialties such as cancer and cited those that were “high performing” in common procedures and conditions such as knee replacement and heart failure.
“Choosing the right hospital to match your needs shouldn’t be a guessing game,” said Ben Harder, the magazine’s chief of health analysis and managing editor. “The 2024-2025 edition of Best Hospitals provides patients and their families clear, data-driven insights on hospital performance and empowers Americans to choose the facility best suited to their specific health care needs.”
