SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Anyone who plays golf knows it can be an extremely frustrating game.
But what if you could turn that frustration into pure fun?
Well, perhaps that’s why Topgolf has become such a popular destination, a place where golfers of all ages and abilities are choosing to go, rather than visiting only a traditional golf course or driving range.
Topgolf in Schaumburg is one of the growing franchise’s 100-plus locations worldwide — with more coming — and one of two in Chicagoland, in addition to the one in Naperville.
Quite simply, making golf fun is Topgolf’s mission.
“I love to see everybody enjoying the game of golf,” says Erik Cederblad, director of operations at Topgolf in Schaumburg. “Topgolf has really revolutionized the way that golf is nowadays. People come here to just enjoy time with loved ones, with family, with friends.
“I love being able to go from (hitting) bay to bay to talk to them and say, ‘What brought you out today? How are you enjoying Topgolf?’ And everybody has a great old smile.”
And, as Cederblad says, “Topgolf is not just a driving range anymore.” Because no matter the skill level, Topgolf’s has visitors covered with games, food and entertainment. There’s music and lights, plus targets out on the range that people can shoot at to score points.
With that scoring, Topgolf offers a number of game options.
The newest, Cederblad says, is called Block Party and is offered at all Topgolf locations, featuring a $50,000 sweepstakes prize. Cederblad said the summer plays and specials just kicked off at the Topgolf in Schaumburg, including Ice Cream Truck Tour, which will dish out free ice cream throughout July.
Golfers can play in any number of games offered by Topgolf, or they can just swing away. They can choose to bring their own clubs, but Topgolf has them, too, for right-handers, left-handers and all ages and sizes.
“I don’t know who has more fun here, myself, my 8-year-old son, or my 80-year-old father,” golfer Brett Whitney says.
Serious golfers will also find plenty of ways to improve their game at Topgolf. The Schaumburg location has two golf pros who are there five to six days a week and offer individual or group lessons.
“They will teach you everything you need to know, from your grip to your swing,” Cederblad says.
Avid golfer Kyle Kehr was at the Topgolf in Schaumburg on Sunday working on his swing.
“I would say my favorite part is that you get to work on all aspects of your game,” he said. “You can work on your chipping, you can work on your driving, you can even play a virtual course here.”
Whatever you’re there for, Topgolf aims to make hitting a golf ball fun, not frustrating.
“It’s not the most easy game in the world to play, as we all know,” Cederblad says. “So when you come in here, you let your guard down, you have some drinks, you have some food, you see the smiles.
“You get everybody just enjoying the time with their friends and their family. And that’s the best thing about Topgolf.”
