Weeks after ESPN let go of a pair of on-air personalities, top NBA writer Zach Lowe appears to be the latest casualty in the company’s cost-cutting efforts.
The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reported on Thursday that Lowe had been laid off. Sources informed Marchand that Lowe’s contract — reportedly “in excess of seven figures annually” — was the primary factor behind the move.
Lowe’s departure follows the retirement of top NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowksi, who’s now the general manager of the St. Bonaventure University men’s basketball team. In addition to hosting their own podcasts, the two men made regular appearances on a variety of ESPN shows.
With Wojnarowski and Lowe no longer at ESPN, the network’s NBA coverage continues to see a massive overhaul. The layoffs first began last summer when more than 20 high-profile personalities were let go. That included NBA analysts Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy — two-thirds of ESPN’s top announcing team.
ESPN’s football coverage has also seen its fair share of significant losses, including Steve Young, Tim Hasselbeck, Suzy Kolber, and Todd McShay.
Lowe had been with ESPN for 12 years. He started at Grantland, the blog started by Bill Simmons that focused on long-form stories blending sports and pop culture. It’s unknown where he’ll go next.
