A teen girl who was found fatally stabbed on the city’s east side early Monday near Arsenal Technical High School was a student identified by Indianapolis Public Schools as Anabel Trujillo. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said a teen boy was in custody in connection with her death.
“Arsenal Tech’s principal shared the heartbreaking news with students, staff and families,” district spokesperson, Marc Ransford said in a statement. “The school will have the IPS Crisis Team onsite to assist students, staff and parents who are grieving this loss and senseless act of violence. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those impacted by this tragic death. We will keep the safety and well-being of our students and staff our top priority.”
At 9:13 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were dispatched to the 400 block of North Randolph Street, near the site of the former women’s prison, on a report of a person stabbed.
Once there, officers found the teen, whose exact age wasn’t immediately provided, mortally wounded. She died at the scene from multiple stab wounds.
“It’s always happening around here,” Tameka Brown, who lives in the neighborhood, told IndyStar. “And it’s sad ’cause that’s somebody’s child. It’s crazy. That’s somebody child is laying out there in the rain. It hits so close to home.”
Brown, who has a 14-year-old daughter, said she immediately called to check on her.
The address is roughly two blocks from Arsenal Tech High School. Police were seen around the campus hours after the girl was found and an officer said the school is on lockdown.
A district spokesperson said nearby Theodore Potter School 74 and H. L. Harshman Middle School campuses also were put on lockdown as a precaution. Lockdowns were being lifted Monday afternoon.

We are grateful to the IPS Police and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) who quickly identified and apprehended the suspect.

Detectives were in the neighborhood canvasing the area for security or surveillance footage much of the morning. Police have not released any information about a suspect, but minutes before 2 p.m. said they had a “person of interest” in custody.
“We are asking the community to come forward with any information they may have,” said Thomas Thompson, the department’s public information officer. “Please come forward.”
