The Pittsburgh Steelers have one benchmark cornerback in Joey Porter Jr. But with Donte Jackson potentially leaving in free agency, the Steelers might be in the market to add another starter this offseason. With the massive contracts free-agent cornerbacks are getting, Pittsburgh could be better off seeking one out in the 2025 NFL draft.
With this week and weekend being the NFL scouting combine, the Steelers have the opportunity to meet many of the top prospects in formal meetings, with one of those being top cornerback Will Johnson. The former Michigan star is a near-lock to come off the board in the top half of the round but it’s good to see the Steelers doing their due diligence in case Johnson slips or the team decides to trade up.
Cornerback ranks behind defensive tackle and wide receiver in our top NFL draft needs for the Steelers but we would have no issue with Pittsburgh going for cornerback in the first if they can land a player at the level of Johnson. He’s going to be a day one starter in the NFL and his transition to a scheme like the Steelers would be largely seamless.
