New technologies. Unpredictable supply chains. Cybersecurity threats.
The manufacturing industry has transformed a lot in recent years and state manufacturing advocate Impact Washington says it’s more critical than ever for manufacturers to be prepared to navigate an increasingly dynamic marketplace.
The organization recently identified what it views as the top five trends in the industry for 2025, which offer increased opportunity and efficiency but also challenges.
Manufacturers are realizing the need for new creative ways to attract talent or find new pools of workers. That means relying not just on competitive pay and benefits but marketing the company via its culture or even pursuing retired workers as well as providing retraining, either improving worker skills or teaching new ones, as technologies change the industry.
Advanced technology, automation and artificial intelligence have initiated a transformation in manufacturing. It’s also created fear of displacement among workers.
While new technology has created efficiencies and innovation, its also opened manufacturers up to cyberattacks that can hinder or shut down operations. Prioritizing cybersecurity is necessary to protect businesses.
The global market has faced significant disruption in recent years, forcing manufacturers to shut down or reduce operations when supply chains became choked up. Now companies are looking at bringing their supply chains back to the domestic market to ensure reliability but also build better relationships with suppliers.
More consumers are concerned about the environmental impact of the goods they purchase and manufacturers need to look for ways to demonstrate sustainability of their products, be it through energy efficiency, waste reduction or source materials.
