South Africa beat Pakistan comfortably by 10 wickets in the second Test on Monday (January 6) at the Newlands in Cape Town. As a result, the hosts sealed the series by a 2-0 margin and completed the whitewash.
The Proteas batted first in the contest and notched up a gigantic total of 615 runs on the back of magnificent contributions from Ryan Rickelton (259), Temba Bavuma (106), and Kyle Verreynne (100). Pakistan were one man down as their opener, Saim Ayub, got injured while fielding during the first innings, which forced him to miss the rest of the game.
South African bowlers skittled out an exhausted Pakistan side for just 194, securing a massive first-innings lead. The visiting team then put on a fight in their second innings after the hosts enforced the follow-on. Shan Masood (145) and Babar Azam (81) laid a solid foundation with a 205-run opening partnership in 46.2 overs.
However, the rest of the batting unit failed to utilize the platform as the Asian team got all-out for 478, setting a paltry target of 58 for South Africa. David Bedingham (47*) and Aiden Markram (14*) helped the Proteas team chase it in 7.1 overs to cap off the game and series.
Fans enjoyed the second Test between the two teams in Cape Town and reacted by sharing memes on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. One of the memes trolling Pakistan for yet another overseas Test loss read:

“The fightback was really special”- Pakistan captain Shan Masood after losing 2nd Test vs South Africa in Cape Town
At the post-match presentation, Pakistan skipper Shan Masood reflected on the loss, saying
“Lot of good things, knowing that we did really well at Centurion, Did not close it at the crunch moments, credit to South Africa. The fightback was really special, we have set the record for most runs against South Africa.”
“But we have got to learn to win the crunch moments, can’t leave it till too late all the time. We’ve been really good in adversity. We have got to learn to land the first punch. We have got a lot of young guys looking to learn, luckily for us we are going straight into the series against West Indies.”
He added:
“I never look at personal milestones, you always want your contributions to end up in a win. The stand with Babar was really good, we almost got through the entire day without losing a wicket, unfortunately Babar got out. He showed a lot of character to come out and open when we lost Saim. There have been a lot of instance where individuals in this team have shown characteristics similar to that and stood up.”
South Africa and Australia will square off in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 in June at Lord’s.
