New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar celebrates his 51st birthday on Wednesday. Widely regarded as one of the greatest batters of all time, the right hander made his debut for India in 1989 and then went on to compile a storied 24-year career.
He made his debut as a 16-year-old in Pakistan, to become the youngest to play for India and went on to build a memorable career.
A look at his topmost records that is hard to be scaled.
Tendulkar is the leading scorer in Tests as well as ODIs, totalling 34,357 runs. Among active cricketers, Virat Kohli is closest to Tendulkar’s mark with 23,650 runs across formats.
In Test cricket, Tendulkar has amassed scored 15,921 runs in 329 innings of 200 matches, followed by Australia’s Ricky Ponting at 13,378 and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis (13,289).
Among current batters, Joe Root is 10th on the all-time list with 11,736 runs in 140 matches.
The former India captain has hit a record century of centuries over his 24-year career, 51 of them in Tests and 49 in ODIs.
While Virat Kohli overtook him with his 50th ton in the ODI World Cup, Ponting is the closest to Tendulkar’s 51 Tests with Kallis’ 45.
Among current batters, Smith has 32 tons, followed by Root’s 31.
Having become the youngest player to represent India in 1989 in an away tour in Pakistan, Tendulkar retired from all formats in 2013.
In his 24-year career, Tendular earned 463 ODI caps, scoring 18,426 runs at an average of 44.83, with 49 hundreds and 96 half centuries.
He is the only player to have featured in 200 Tests, with his final game in the five-day format against West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in November 2013.
England pacer James Anderson, 40, is currently the highest capped player in Test cricket with 187 appearances.
In 200 Tests, Tendulkar scored 15,921 runs at an average of 53.78, including 51 tons and 68 half-centuries, with his highest score being 248 not out.
He appeared in six editions of the World Cup from 1992 to 2011, winning the title with India at his final attempt, and hold the record for most runs at the marquee event.
He scored 2,278 runs at an average of 56.95, including six hundreds and 15 fifties. Ponting is second with 1743 runs. None of the active cricketers is in the top five.
