Ryan Murphy Believes Monsters Is ‘Best Thing That Has Happened To Menendez Brothers In 30 Years’, Won’t Reach Out (Image credit: Netflix)
Prolific filmmaker Ryan Murphy, who has at least four new shows coming out this month on OTT, is not interested in the Menendez ‘s family statements about his depiction of the events leading up to and after the murders of Kitty and Jose Menendez by their two sons. His show, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, currently sits at the top of the charts on Netflix‘s global streaming charts. In a new interview, Murphy also believe the show will be highly influential to the brothers as they are currently looking to appeal for a new trial.
After Erik Menendez, members of his family put out a statement against the show that said Monsters was a “grotesque shockadrama” and “riddled with mistruths”. They also added, “The character assassination of Erik and Lyle, who are our nephews and cousins, under the guise of a ‘story telling narrative’, is repulsive.”
Murphy, in an interview with Variety, responded to the family response, calling it predictable. He stated, “It’s all been presented before. What we’re doing is we’re the first to present it in one contained ecosystem. What’s grotesque about it? … Tammi [and] the family, they have always done this and they did this recently — they say, ‘lies after lies’ — but then they don’t say what the lies are. They don’t back up anything.”
Erik and Lyle are currently serving life in prison in California without the possibility of parole. The brother are looking for a new trial to try their case once again. Murphy felt that the Netflix show is “the best thing that has happened to the Menendez brothers in 30 years. They are now being talked about by millions of people all over the world. We’re asking really difficult questions, and it’s giving these brothers another trial in the court of public opinion. From what I can tell, it’s really opened up the possibility that this evidence that they claim that they have, maybe that there is going to be a way forward for them.”
Actor Cooper Koch, who plays younger brother Erik Menendez, recently met up with the brothers in prison. He visited the jail with Kim Kardashian to discuss prison reform with inmates. Murphy added that he didn’t have anything to talk with them now. “I have no interest in talking to them. My job as an artist was to tell a perspective in a particular story. I feel I’ve done that, but I wish them well.”
