Given the level of success that the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs have had over a sustained period of time, it’s not a surprise those three teams are regarded as having the best front offices in the NFL.
In a poll of 40 NFL insiders that includes high-ranking executives and coaches conducted by The Athletic, the Ravens were voted as the best front office with a total of 259 points and 150 points coming from first-place votes.
The Chiefs were ranked second with 174 total points and 130 first-place vote points, followed by the 49ers with 151 points. The Philadelphia Eagles (140) were the only other team to receive at least 100 points in the voting.
Interestingly, the 49ers actually fewer first-place points (30) than the Eagles (50). They finished ahead in the overall standings by being named on 26 ballots, three more than the Eagles.
The Ravens have been a well-oiled machine for more than two decades at this point. General manager Eric DeCosta has done a terrific job since taking after the 2018 season when Ozzie Newsome stepped down.
Baltimore has made the postseason 15 times and had just five losing seasons since 2000. That stretch includes two Super Bowl titles in 2000 and 2012. The team hasn’t won fewer than eight games in a season since 2015.
“Consistency,” an NFC executive told The Athletic about the Ravens’ front office. “They know what a Raven is and understand how to win with those guys.”
The Chiefs earned praise for the symmetry between general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid, whose working partnership dates back to 2004 when they were both with the Eagles.
“Veach grew up around Andy, so I think there is a very clear vision on what types of players they’re looking for and what works in their system,” one executive said of the Chiefs’ hierarchy. “Along with the winning comes continuity, and I think that staff as a whole has a very strong understanding of what works there. I think Veach and (assistant general manager Mike) Borgonzi are good evaluators. They have an eye for talent along with an understanding of what plays in the league.”
The 49ers were at the center of a lot of offseason discussion because of contract issues involving Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams, but as one general manager said, that was because the tandem of general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have assembled “so many good football players” on the roster.
There were three teams outside of the top four that received at least one first-place vote. They were the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Detroit Lions, who finished fifth with 62 total points, were named on 20 ballots without receiving a first-place vote.
One general manager argued that Lions GM Brad Holmes might be the best in the league right now because of what he has done in overseeing their rebuild since being hired in January 2021.
“If you asked: Who is the No. 1 GM in the league right now, this minute? It might be him,” the opposing general manager said. “I love the demeanor, love what he stands for.”
The other teams in the top 10 that received votes were the Green Bay Packers (54 total points) and Buffalo Bills (33 points).
If you were to make a list of the best teams in the NFL right now, these 10 teams would at least warrant discussion for inclusion. Even a Rams team that has been decimated by injuries to start the season earned an impressive 27-24 win over the 49ers in Week 3 thanks in large part to the tandem of head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford.
