Ranking the top 10 point guards in today’s NBA is a difficult exercise, mostly because more than 10 guys are deserving of a spot.
Before we start counting down the top-10 list, here are six players who missed the cut but arguably deserve to be in there:
- Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks)
- Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons)
- Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers)
- Derrick White (Boston Celtics)
- Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets)
- Jrue Holiday (Boston Celtics)
Without further ado, let’s kick off the list with No. 10…
10. Damian Lillard
Age: 34
2024-25 Stats
- 24.8 PPG
- 7.3 APG
- 4.4 RPG
- Shooting splits: 44.0 | 37.5 | 91.2
Small point guards normally start to decline in their mid-30s, but Dame isn’t showing signs of that yet. Sure, he’s no longer in his athletic prime, but Lillard can still operate as a No. 1 option when the Milwaukee Bucks need him to (they rarely do, having Giannis Antetokounmpo).
Lillard has logged eight 30-plus scoring performances this season and one 40-plus outing. His numbers would undoubtedly be higher if he were on a worse team like his original squad Portland, where he averaged between 19 and 21 shots per night for the majority of his career. Lillard’s averaging 17.4 shots a game for the Bucks so far during his time in Milwaukee.
Lillard’s never been a defensive factor, which will only become more apparent as he ages. But in a playoff series when things slow down and experience, skill, and IQ become more important, Dame is still easily one of the 10 point guards any NBA coach would choose to have on the floor in a crunch-time situation.
But who tops Lillard as the ninth-best point guard in the game today? Find out below.
