With final betting odds of 18-1, Mystik Dan wasn’t among the top picks to win the 2024 Kentucky Derby. Yet, the Ken McPeek-trained colt raced to victory at Churchill Downs on Saturday, beating out Sierra Leone and Forever Young in a photo finish.
Now, the focus shifts to the second leg of horse racing’s three-race Triple Crown schedule: the Preakness Stakes, scheduled for May 18. The big question at this point is whether Mystik Dan will be among the horses in the field.
“We’re not committed to the Preakness, not yet,” McPeek said Sunday morning, per Gary B. Graves of the Associated Press. “I ran him back once in two weeks and it completely backfired on me. … So, we’ll just watch him over the next week. It’ll be one of those [situations] where we’ll probably take it up to the last minute.”
Sierra Leone and Forever Young won’t be racing the Preakness. So, who will be competing at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore in less than two weeks?
Here’s everything we know about the 2024 Preakness Stakes thus far.

The betting window for Preakness futures bets closed Saturday about an hour before the Kentucky Derby. At that time, Mystik Dan had 45-1 odds to win the Preakness. However, those will surely improve once new lines are released.
If Mystik Dan races the Preakness, he will likely be among the top favorites. For one, he just won the Kentucky Derby. Also, the field isn’t likely to be stacked due to plenty of Derby horses not being entered into the race.
However, there’s also one non-Derby horse to keep a close eye on: Muth.
Before the Preakness futures window ended, Muth had the best odds to win the race at 7-2. There’s a good chance he’ll still be the favorite over Mystik Dan when new odds come out.
Muth didn’t race the Kentucky Derby because trainer Bob Baffert is suspended from Churchill Downs through the end of the year due to 2021 Derby winner Medina Spirit failing a test betamethasone, a banned steroid.
But Baffert has been allowed to enter horses at races at Pimlico Race Course. Last year, he was victorious at the Preakness for the eighth time, as National Treasure crossed the finish line first.
Muth has finished either first or second in each of his first six races, which included a win at the Arkansas Derby in March. So he appears poised to be the front-runner at this year’s Preakness.
But Mystik Dan now has an impressive resume himself. He owns three victories, with two coming over his past three races. He also hasn’t finished worse than third during that span.
It’s possible that Catching Freedom (who finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby) will race the Preakness. Trainer Brad Cox has not yet decided to enter the colt and is monitoring him for the time being, according to Graves.
Muth may not be the only Baffert-trained horse in the Preakness field. He could also enter Imagination, who was the runner-up at the Santa Anita Derby last month.
