The Los Angeles Chargers are positioning themselves for a potential playoff run and perhaps the best part of that is that they are doing so rather quietly. That’s probably the way Jim Harbaugh likes it.
The Chargers have won three games in a row and four of their last five to put their record at 6-3, right in the mix of the top teams in the AFC. With the way the Chargers run the ball and play defense, on top of having a great quarterback in Justin Herbert, the team is quickly putting together a formidable squad.
Those who compile power rankings are beginning to take notice. Have the Chargers done enough to crack the top 10? That depends on who you ask.
Vinnie Iyer, in his latest power rankings, has the Chargers just outside the top 10, coming in at No. 11, up two slots from last week after their win over the Tennessee Titans. Here is what he had to say:
“The Chargers have seen Justin Herbert get into a downfield passing groove to support the strong rushing attack, which also makes things easier on the defense. Jim Harbaugh’s team is the Falcons of the NFC — just worried about getting to its best come AFC playoff time.”
The Chargers are squarely in the middle of the playoff race in the AFC, but their detractors would likely point to a lack of quality wins. They would have a legitimate point as the teams the Chargers have beaten in the last three weeks have a combined record of 7-21 on the season.
Still, Eric Edholm over at NFL.com gave the Chargers a bit more love than Iyer this week and he has the Bolts sitting at No. 10 in his rankings.
The Chargers can make a big statement on Sunday Night Football this week when they host the Cincinnati Bengals, a team that has been hot offensively and was looked at as one of the best teams in the AFC coming into the season.
