Should Lamar Jackson, fresh off another historic season, arguably better than last year’s campaign when he won his second MVP, be granted his third honor? Should Josh Allen, who managed to carry Buffalo to the No. 2 seed in the AFC despite throwing to Khalil Shakir and a washed-up Amari Cooper? What about Saquon Barkley, who became just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards?
All of these players have legitimate claims to the award, but only one could end up walking away with it. At this year’s NFL Honors, it wound up being Allen. Here’s a full breakdown of the voting results.
Allen beat out Jackson, who had previously won the award twice. It’s considered the closest MVP race since former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan beat out former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2016.
Allen completed 307 of 483 passes for 3,731 yards, 28 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 531 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. The Bills fell short of a chance to play in the Super Bowl, losing to the Chiefs 32-29 in the AFC Championship Game.
He is the third Bill to win the award. O.J. Simpson (1973) and Thurman Thomas (1991) previously won the award.
Allen was named the league’s most valuable player for the 2024 season. Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson were the other finalists for the award.
Allen was the top vote-getter with 383. Jackson finished second with 362 votes and Barkley finished with 120 for third.
Barkley was named the Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for a league-high 2,005 yards. Burrow was named the league’s Comeback Player of the Year after leading the league with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns.
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year. The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner led the Commanders back to the playoffs. He completed 331 of 480 passes for 4,568 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 891 yards and six touchdowns.
Los Angeles Rams defensive end Jared Verse was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Verse had 4.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II was named the Defensive Player of the Year. He became the first cornerback to win the award since the 2019 season.
Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell was named Coach of the Year, beating out Lions coach Dan Campbell. He became the first Vikings coach to win the award since Bud Grant in 1969.
