Lamar Jackson is not only having the best season of his career. He may finish with the best season of anyone’s quarterback career.
Jackson currently sits No. 2 behind only Aaron Rodgers in single-season quarterback rating. Jackson’s is 121.6. Rodgers finished the 2011 season with a 122.5 QB rating.
If Jackson finishes with at least a QB rating of 134.4 or better in Saturday’s regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns, Jackson will set the new record.
Jackson has topped that QB rating in seven games this season, including two of the past three games. He was asked Tuesday if setting that record would be meaningful to him.
“If I’m in my childhood mindset [with] breaking a record, yes,” Jackson said. “But I’m trying to win games, so it really [doesn’t] matter. If it happens, it happens. If it [doesn’t, it] probably will happen sometime down the line.”
Jackson said last week that winning his third MVP is not his focus, but it also bears noting that the full-time starting quarterbacks who finished with the top five QB rating seasons in NFL history all won MVP: Rodgers (2011 & 2020), Peyton Manning (2004), Tom Brady (2007), and Matt Ryan (2016).
Asked whether Jackson should win the MVP award, Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum said, “yes, absolutely.”
“I get to see Jackson every day [and] the things he’s able to do, and then carrying it over to the game,” Linderbaum said. “He’s just a special player. He’s extremely fun to play with – just the things he’s able to do – and think there’s no one more deserving of that award than Lamar Jackson.”
