The 2024 NBA draft is just two days away and there’s no clear-cut choice for the No. 1 pick. In fact, mystery shrouds the top-three picks.
The Atlanta Hawks won the lottery and the No. 1 pick, but there’s not a Victor Wembanyama in this year’s draft class. The lack of a consensus top pick has added a layer of intrigue regarding the Hawks’ decision.
The Hawks were expected to select French big man Alex Sarr, who averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 17 minutes per game with the Perth Wildcats in 27 games this past season in Australia. However, they reportedly haven’t been able to get a workout with the 7-foot-1 frontcourt player.
“The Hawks have been unable to bring Alex Sarr in for a workout to this point, but the door remains open for that to potentially happen,” ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony wrote in his latest mock draft.
That’s not a good sign just days before the draft.
Apparently, Sarr’s representatives don’t want him to wear the Hawks’ jersey next season. They reportedly see Sarr as a natural four, but the Hawks already have Jalen Johnson’s position, meaning the Sarr could slide to the five spot. Sarr’s people reportedly aren’t interested in that scenario.
“Like right now, all this word that Atlanta is not a situation that WME wants Alex Sarr,” said Yahoo Sports Jake Fischer on the “Ball Don’t Lie” podcast. “They don’t want him to be a member of the Hawks.”
There have also been rumors that Hawks’ stars Trae Young and Dejounte Murray could be traded. The two players are still on the roster, but the offseason is just beginning. The potential instability on the roster could be another factor in Sarr’s reported reluctance to join the Hawks.
The drama may have prompted the Hawks to pivot away from the Sarr and take a longer look at another French player, Zaccharie Risacher, as well as UConn center Donovan Clingan with the top pick.
If the Hawks opt for Risacher, the Washington Wizards would be thrilled to see Sarr drop into their lap with the No. 2 pick. Sarr is more of a defensive specialist whose offense is a work in progress. The Houston Rockets possess the No. 3 pick, and they’ve signaled a willingness to deal the pick. A number of teams, looking to select Clingan, are reportedly interested.
