Patna: Lauding India’s success at the Paris Paralympics this year, BJP national president JP Nadda Saturday said PM Narendra Modi has put sports on the priority list, unlike his counterparts, and ensured world-class arrangements for the athletes to compete in the national and international events.
Nadda arrived in the city on a one-day visit to boost the BJP’s organisational membership campaign. This is the second visit of the BJP leader to the city in September.
Speaking at the function, he gave party membership to 108 sportspersons, including two paralympic medalists Shailesh Kumar and Sharad Kumar and eight other paralympic participants from the state. He also honoured the players who represented the country at the Paris Paralympics. “Earlier, sports was not given priority, and everything from selection to training of sportspersons was conducted routinely, but PM Modi gave priority to the sports. Special training arrangements have been made to prepare athletes to excel in national and international events,” Nadda said.
After the function, the BJP president held a meeting with the party’s MPs and MLAs and guided them to engage actively in the membership drive. He also had a separate meeting with the party’s state functionaries. The mega membership drive of the saffron party started on September 3. According to BJP sources, around 30 lakh members, including those whose membership was renewed, have already been made till now. They said that the target fixed for the party’s state unit is one crore, which, if achieved, would be 20 lakh more than the 80 lakh members it had.
Meanwhile, state Congress spokesperson Rajesh Rathore launched a scathing attack on the BJP, alleging that the party has been trying to “wash its guilt and taint” of maltreatment meted out to women wrestlers during the protest against the ex-chief of Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Singh.
