Mystic Dan‘s win in the Kentucky Derby put him at no. 1 in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s latest poll of the top 3-year-olds. Previously, he was ranked no. 15.
Also joining the top 10 was Thorpedo Anna, his stablemate in the Kenny McPeek barn and winner of Friday’s Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. She’s the only filly in the top 10 and previously was no. 25.
Sierra Leone, runner-up in the Kentucky Derby and previously no. 1 in the poll, slipped to no. 2. Fierceness, the favorite for the Derby, dropped from no. 2 to no. 8.
The 3-year-old poll represents horses competing up and through the Triple Crown. Voting is conducted by national media.

Saudi Cup (G1) winner Señor Buscador remained at the top of the NTRA’s top Thoroughbred poll. Idiomatic, the 2023 champion older dirt female, jumped to no. 2 after her win in the La Troienne (G1) on the Kentucky Oaks undercard.
The top thoroughbred poll represents horses competing for horse of the year, and the poll concludes on Tuesday, Nov. 5, after the Breeders’ Cup.
