Former Israeli PM says targeting Iranian supreme leader should not be ‘off the table’
Former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett says nothing should be “off the table” in Israel’s response to Iran’s missile attack – including targeting its supreme leader.
Israel has vowed to respond after Tehran launched a barrage of nearly 200 missiles at Israeli territory on 1 October in retaliation to Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Asked by our lead world presenter Yalda Hakim what he believes Israel should do, Mr Bennett said Iran’s “nuclear programme” and “regime centres” should be struck, and its regime “toppled”.
“Never before was one nation attacked by so many long-range ballistic missiles,” he said of Israel.
“The people are an amazing people, the Iranians. But the regime… it’s an octopus of terror. We should not take anything off the table.”
Pressed on whether that meant Israel should target Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei, Mr Bennett replied: “Everything should be on the table.”
Joe Biden has said he won’t support an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, and that Israel’s response should be “proportional”.
But Mr Bennett said he believes Iran’s nuclear programme should be targeted to “slow down the acquisition of nuclear weapons”.
He also said that if Israel “did what was proportional, it would be the most horrendous attack, because what’s been done to Israel over the past year is crazy”.
