The Michigan men’s basketball team was rewarded for another strong week by moving up in Monday’s AP Top 25 poll.
The Wolverines improved four spots to No. 20 in the weekly poll. They beat Washington at home on Sunday, 91-75, and won at then-No. 22 UCLA 94-75 on Tuesday. They have won five straight games and are 13-3 overall.
“We can’t believe the hype,” Michigan head coach Dusty May said on Monday, shortly before the latest poll was released.
Michigan plays at Minnesota on Thursday and hosts Northwestern on Sunday.
Though the Wolverines are 5-0 in the Big Ten and tied atop the league standings with No. 12 Michigan State, they trail fellow league members Oregon (No. 13), Purdue (17), and Illinois (19) in the poll. Wisconsin (24) is the sixth Big Ten team to crack the Top 25.
While the Michigan men rose in the poll, the Michigan women just barely fell out.
Just as the Michigan men rising in the poll was no surprise, the Michigan women dropping out also wasn’t a shock. The Wolverines were at No. 25 last week, went 1-1 since, and dropped one spot. There is a two-team tie for No. 24, with both teams receiving 45 points. Michigan received 43 points.
The Wolverines lost at home to No. 9 Ohio State on Wednesday, 84-77. Michigan won at Purdue 87-60 on Saturday. Michigan hosts Washington and Wednesday and visits Rutgers on Saturday. UCLA remains on top of the women’s poll, with fellow Big Ten newcomer USC at No. 4. The other league members in the Top 25 are Maryland (8), Ohio State (9), Michigan State (22), and Minnesota (tied at 24).
