Meta Annual Bonus: Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta is ready to reward its top-level executives with massive bonuses. The move comes only a week after the IT giant laid off about 3,600 employees.
Article Highlights
According to a corporate filing by Meta, the company has hiked the bonuses of the executives to 200 per cent of their base salary, more than double the previous 75 per cent bonus.
In its defence, Meta board stated that, before the hike, the “target total cash compensation” for executives was “at or below the 15th percentile of the target total cash compensation of executives holding similar positions” at rival companies.
“Following this increase, the target total cash compensation for the named executive officers (other than the CEO) falls at approximately the 50th percentile of the Peer Group Target Cash Compensation,” the company stated.
On the rationale behind the decision, the board maintained that it was necessary to retain top talent and keep compensation competitive within the industry. The timing of the announcement of the revised bonus however has sparked widespread criticism.
The decision about the hike in the bonuses of top-level executives comes shortly after Meta sacked around 5 per cent of its global workforce, citing “low performance” as the reason for the job cuts.
One social media user wrote, as quoted by ET, “Executives always think they are deserving of more money, regardless of their performance. And they rarely think regular workers are deserving of more money.”
Another user added, “Always more for the top, less for workers. Meanwhile, thousands are out of work looking for opportunities. I wish we could easily avoid Meta, but it’s hard to avoid in this social media era.”
Apart from the backlash on the social media, some former Meta employees have accused the tech company of unfairly dismissing workers. Many believe the layoffs were not truly performance-related but motivated by cost-cutting measures, reported ET.
Some employees claimed that they had to lose their jobs other than poor performance, including taking approved leave. Alleging the company was more focused on financial gain than treating its workforce fairly, one former employee stated, “Meta is the cruellest tech company.”
